a new light

Not so long ago, the light in the kitchen looked like this:

It must have been put in when the former owners redid the kitchen, and, since we had other things to spend the money on, L. and I decided to re-install it when we replaced the wiring.

However, it mysteriously stopped working one cold, dark night. Sean-the-electrician confirmed that it had blown its internal fuse due to its faulty design. So, for a few weeks we had this:

I am happy to report that as of last week, the light in the kitchen looks like this:

And I am perhaps a little too happy that it now matches the spot lights in the living room (which look like this:

the sadest porch light

Months ago, when we were still stumbling over heaps of rubble piled along the front walk, L. and I decided what we need is a porch light. Being eco-minded, we thought we'd go for something solar powered. Being good neighbours, we didn't want it to be too bright. And, being a suspicious bugger, L. wanted something we could bolt to the house.

I'm a bit ashamed to report that with one thing and another, it wasn't until last week that we finally put it up.

The porch light, finally in place:

However, it seems that with all of our requirements, we've ended up with a decorative, rather than illuminating porch light:

Indeed, last night, it wasn't until we were nearly at the door that, squinting, we said, 'Ah, look! there's our new light':

So, until we get around to buying a more powerful one, we'll have to rely on the light provided by the street light, our neighbour's much more impressive porch light, and, on occasion, the moon:

More on beds

Lukas and I have a problem. We got the new, 6 inches larger bed without....um...trying it first.

Once the bed was released from its vacuum packaging and we spent a few nights on it, a trend became obvious.

I (she-who-needs-10 hours-of-sleep-and-then-some) am going to bed at midnight and waking up at 7 and humming happily whilst making breakfast.

Poor L., on the other hand, (he-who-goes-to-bed-at-2am-and-wakes-up-annoyingly-5 hours-later) is feeling less chirpy in the morning.

Difficult decisions await....

In other news, the light that was in the bedroom when we bought it, has been cleaned up, broken glass bits have been removed, and it's found a new home in the little room - adding a bit of glamour to our storage.

Also, we've added to our art collection with this lovely wood block print (from eBay, of course). Now, we just need to find a frame...
