On stairs

The poor stairs have had a history of being unattractive.
When we bought the house, they were covered in an absolutely disgusting carpet (this picture doesn't begin to capture the grunginess)

However, we decided to keep the carpet on the stairs for a few months in hopes of protecting what was underneath, so eventually, we could strip and stain it. When we took the carpet off, though, we didn't quite have the lovely wood underneath that we thought we might have:

After pulling out at least 100 staples and nails, it became clear that the stairs would never be the beautiful things that we had imagined, and that sanding them down might not be the best option.
So, instead, they've been painted!

Amazingly, the four coats of new paint have somehow stopped their squeaking - an unexpected bonus.

And now, we just have to find a nice runner to complete the look.
